Don't tell me what to do, I am supposed to sell! -- APX in Rhode Island

I found this article after a loyal and avid reader directed me to. I wish I could have found it sooner! It's entertaining! It does a great job at boiling down the issues for APX Alarm. It's not what they do, it's how they do it. Their home security system is a comparable system to any other company out there when installed correctly, I will give them that. It does what it is supposed to do. But I think Dane McCartney coined a new catch phrase for APX Alarm, "Don't tell me what to do, I am supposed to sell!"

APX gets highlighted by a Rhode Island news company, there is a lengthy interview, a salesman ambush, good points are made, I would rank this pretty high quality.

It boils APX down to the fact that they only get permits if it is brought to their attention that they have to have it.

Look, not to beat a dead horse, but APX Alarm and other door-to-door alarm companies for that matter, sell the service of police, medical and fire response, but don't even go through the steps to get the proper licensing to do the work. Do you see the disconnect there? It costs police money wehn they respond to a false alarm. Where does that money come from? Taxes from people and businesses in the area. If the company that is selling the police response pays nothing in taxes because they only have temporary offices in the area or neglects to get the permit fee and the proper paperwork done, what does that say about the company? A lot.

Check the news report out for yourself.

I must say that is classic video. It is a must watch. Dane McCartney gets sideswiped and in turn decides to go hyper-aggressive and use the either-for-me-or-against-me attitude and lay out some of the best quotes I have heard in a while:

Here are a few:

  • "But if we weren't on the news and you had this microphone in my face, it would be a whole different story, buddy." Tim White then says, "what does that mean?" Dane then says, "Just read between the lines, ok?" And keeps on repeating, "just read between the lines pal." It would be a different story, he got that right. Assault and Battery would be the story.
  • Dane says, "I don't want the mic in my face." Tim White states simply, "that's usually how we get the sound."
  • Dane says, "I don't tell people that the phone lines are being cut, in their neighborhood. I don't tell people that there are break ins, in their neighborhood. It's general." It's unfortunate that asterisks can't happen in speech.
  • And my favorite of all, "don't tell me what I'm supposed to do, I am supposed to sell!"
  • "I'm not going to walk around in the ghetto for no reason." This in regards to if he gets paid on commission (please note surrounding) McCartney is at a house he knocks on, and he is on the news, in the town he works in. Not the most brilliant comment.
Looks like all of that got Nathan Wilcox's attention. He flew out and had a little talk and told Dane to hypothetically hit the showers. Basically, sent him to another office probably. I would bet my bottom dollar that they didn't fire him, even though they said they did. He was office manager, of a fairly successful office. Though, if APX did fire him a few days before the end of the summer, that would be tragic. No back end, no office override, that would truly be a harsh break off. Interesting to see what would happen.

Check out the videos here. They are very interesting.

Extended interview with Nathan Wilcox

I'm surprised you posted the interview with Nathan Wilcox who was speaking for the company regarding all of the customer safety nets that APX offers throught the verification surveys. Also it's funny that you get "hit the showers" from "terminated". No company will skip out on licensing to save a few bucks. I don't get why you seem to think any company would do that. Dane is an idiot for acting how he did and it's a good thing that he got terminated because its people like him that give good companies a bad name.

The link you use referring to the success of Dane’s office goes to a family blog. I wouldn't say that’s a very reliable or accurate source but then again most of your "facts" aren't accurate are they. Just cause a news agency reports on one side of a story doesn't mean it's true. You should also consider starting another site similar to this one but one that focuses on how most auto mechanics, dentists, lawyers, state inspectors, government agencies, and all sales reps are out to screw people and waste people's time and run them over all because of greed.

If you'll read closely Dane was actually mentioned in the linked post. The post at least demonstrates that Dane was an office manager and had established a successful office. It also shows the lucrative position the author was in. Nothing wrong with that.
You might also notice in that blog entry that "ghetto" is consistently used as a noun to describe the market areas. Looks like it was a standard term.
As far as "one side of a story", here's the other side. I'm an APX corporate employee, and this blog isn't only accurate, it barely scratches the surface of what goes on consistently in these sales.

Dear InsideAPX-
You must work in the call center and have to deal with only the complaints from customers (which I’ve done during my early years in the industry). I've been with APX and other companies for many years and yeah there are dishonest reps and techs but they are found in every company in every industry. I've worked with "office managers" (technically called Sales Managers or Area Managers) that were in that position but were not very successful because either they couldn’t recruit or they couldn’t sell. A successful Area Manager would be someone that not only can recruit but can sell and if he can sell and do it ethically then he probably would have been able to handle a little press coverage, unlike Dane. So until you justify why he’s successful by showing me how many sales he had and how many recruits he got to go out this summer then it just goes to show that you know nothing about this Sales Manager. Dane is not the typical APX that I've been a part of for years and if you think this is so typical then why you still work for a company that in your mind is dishonest? Wouldn't that make you just as dishonest as the rest of us who supposedly are always lying and cheating others? Keith and Todd care very much about keeping integrity in every aspect of the contract and sale. They have and will fire dishonest employees, they have and will fire employees that don’t pass random drug tests, they have and will pay to correct the problems caused by those dishonest employees to make sure the customer is not the one getting shafted. Until you can give me information that proves you know what you’re even talking about then maybe you should just go back to answering phones and dealing with the complaints.

I've worked in Data Entry as well. I am well familiar with the attitudes of a cross section of the reps. I've also sold for another company. I might be using terminology from a company other than APX as far as the Sales Managers go. Nobody said that all sales reps are bad, so no need to be defensive. But it's generally true that sales management typically comes from successful reps. I've also seen good faith actions by the company. However, the setup of the sales model is inherently prone to abusive sales practices. I've seen the spreadsheets detailing the list of complaints against specific reps (2007 was the latest offical compilation I saw). Reps who have 6+ registered complaints (not common to have them reported from CS) for the same blatant lies are back year after year.
As for your persecution complex, there ARE sites to expose other professions who screw people. Rightly so. Exposing when something is wrong is the only way to fix the problem. Dane was fired, it's because the reporters did their job. Nobody gets a news story about them for being honest. You get paid for that. Don't you want the bad apples exposed?
As for my job choice, I'll be more than glad to keep helping your sales get the right information or get canceled.

InsideAPX-
I don't work on the sales side nor have I worked in DE but in any company or industry every department will revolve around the sales side, some closer than others. Mine does work very closely to them and yes I'm all for firing any and all of the sales reps that are engaging in lying to customers. We do what we can to make sure that we are honest as a company and yes there will be individuals that try to cheat the system but we do try to eliminate the loop holes and those that try to cheat the system. We're not perfect but I promise if you have any suggestions go to any of your managers or even Todd, Keith, or Shaun and they'll listen to your suggestion on how to make the system perfect and maybe even apply your suggestion if it would work and if it hasn’t or isn’t already being done.
Not all reps lie and not all customers tell the truth. This site doesn't point that fact out. The contract is in place for the protection of the customer and for the protection of the company. If a customer feels like they don't want to buy a system that very second that the rep is on the door step then don't. Keep the paperwork, look it over, and then call the rep back later. Reps push for the same day because then the customer will have the equipment in the house to actually see what it is they're getting, but if they need more time to look over the agreement then go for it take that time. Seriously I have never signed anything in my life because someone was being pushy so how do some people think they are that weak.

I find it funny that I and a couple of my co-workers have sent you articles that show positive things that are going on in the industry but coinsidentally you've been REALLY REALLY bust and haven't found time to post them. It's a good thing this site isn't biased or anything right?

Calm down, it's coming. Tell them to resend it though, I only have one that I can think of. You make it sound like there is a pile of stuff.
